Juan-les-Pins, France July 1965 concert poster

Original first printing concert poster advertising the 6th Annual Antibes Jazz Festival held in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera from 24th to 30th July, 1965, headlined by Woody Herman and the John Coltrane Quartet. Other performers included Nina Simone (her first tour of Europe), Stephane Grappelly, Sven Asmussen, Stuff Smith, the Jimmy McGriff Trio, the Staple Singers, the Bruce Turner Jump Band, the Boy Edgar Big Band, and the Jef Gilson Sextet. Coltrane’s quartet featured pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. Their two concerts were famously recorded by French television and released in 1988 as Live in Antibes, 1965 on the France’s Concert label. Within a few months of their Antibes performances the group’s personnel would change with only Jimmy Garrison remaining on. Tyner embarked on a career as a bandleader, while Jones led several small groups, some under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. Coltrane died of liver cancer on 17th July, 1967, aged 40. The poster features artwork by Gerard Hage, with the artist’s imprint to the lower left side border.

The poster measures 32.0 x 60.0 cm and is printed on thin, coated paper stock. Printer’s imprint (Imp MSP, Toulouse) to the bottom left corner. Light sporadic edge wear and a touch of handling wear, else in near excellent unfolded condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
