Festhalle, Hamburg April 1960 concert poster (Klaus Nengelken)
Original first printing vintage concert poster advertising the Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Festhalle in Hamburg [Germany] on Monday, 4th April, 1960, presented by Ralf Schulte-Bahrenberg in cooperation with Kurt Collien. This was the Quartet at its peak, having released the classic Time Out album only a few months prior to the European tour. It was an album about which the label (Columbia Records) was enthusiastic but which they were nonetheless hesitant to release. Featuring the cover art of S. Neil Fujita, the album contained all original compositions, almost none of which were in common time. Nonetheless, on the strength of these unusual time signatures (the album included “Take Five”, “Blue Rondo à la Turk”, and “Three To Get Ready”), it quickly went Platinum. Produced by Teo Macero, it was the first jazz album to sell more than a million copies. The poster features artwork by Klaus Nengelken, with the artist’s imprint to the bottom left corner.
The poster measures 59.5 x 84.5 cm and is printed on thin, uncoated paper stock. Printer’s imprint (Hub. Hoch, Düsseldorf) to the bottom left corner. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
