Théâtre National Populaire, Paris November 1971 concert poster (Jacno)

Original vintage first printing concert poster advertising American jazz drummer and bandleader Buddy Rich (1917–1987) at the Théâtre National Populaire in Paris [France] on Monday, 29th November, 1971, presented by the RTF in cooperation with George Wein. The show in Paris was part of Rich’s European tour during November and December in support of A Different Drummer, recorded at RCA Studio C in New York City during July and August 1971, and produced by Pete Spargo. The orchestra for the European tour featured Brian Grivna, Jimmy Mosher, Pat La Barbera, Don Englert, Joe Calo (saxophones); Lin Biviano, John DeFlon, Wayne Naus, Jeff Stout (trumpets); Bruce Paulson, Tony DiMaggio, John Leys (trombones); Bobby Peterson (piano); David Spinozza (guitar); Bob Daugherty (bass); Candido Camero (bongos, conga); and Phil Kraus (percussion). The poster features artwork by renowned French graphic artist Marcel Jacno (1904—1989), with the artist’s imprint to the lower left side. It was Jacno who was responsible for designing the TNP logo in 1951. A logotype that represents a stamp similar to those applied to the coffers of touring theatre companies. The success led Jacno to work extensively for theatre and live performance. From the 1950s to the 1980s, he emerged as the leading graphic designer in this field. Printed by Imprimerie Affiches Gaillard, Paris, with the printer’s imprint to the bottom left corner.

The poster measures 32.2 x 49.8 cm (approx. 12.7″ by 19.6″ inches) and is printed in blue, red and black inks on thin, matte-coated paper stock (coated on front only). The poster has been folded horizontally at the middle, with light wear to the top and bottom left side corners, else in remarkably near excellent condition.
