Paris: Éditions Gallimard (Du monde entier), 1960 [Charters D13]. First French edition of On the Road, translated by Jacques Houbard. Contains a 5-page introduction by Michel Mohrt. Unknown number of copies issued on 19th February 1960. A limited edition of 35 numbered copies and 7 lettered copies marked A-G were published simultaneously with the trade edition. Identical second and third printings were issued in 1971 and 1972. Publishing price for the trade edition was 15 NF.

Considered a defining work of the postwar beat and counter culture generations, On the Road was originally published by Viking Press on 5th September, 1957. The novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005, and the Modern Library ranked the book 55th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Crown octavo (8vo), 386 pp. In original cream colored uncoated wrappers printed in red and black. All edges of the text block are untrimmed and unstained. Published in the uncut state. This copy is unread and remains in the uncut state. Light age toning to spine and extremities, else near fine. Additional photos available on request.
