Planten un Blomen, Hamburg February 1973 concert poster (Holitzka)

Original first printing vintage concert poster advertising English progressive rock band Family at the Planten un Blomen in Hamburg [Germany] on Friday, 23rd February, 1973, presented by SIP in cooperation with Karsten Jahnke, and with British rock band Home also on the bill. Family was touring in support of the Bandstand album, their sixth studio album, produced by the band themselves with George Chkiantz, and released in September 1972 by Reprise Records. The album marked a notable change of direction for the band. Family’s sound had become more mainstream and somewhat more conventional. Their sound was brought closer to the mainstream by British soul singer Linda Lewis contributing backing vocals, and Del Newman string arrangements. Bandstand was the last Family album to feature bassist John Wetton. Having joined the band only a year earlier and being a large vocal and instrumental presence on Fearless (1971), Wetton’s role in the band was reduced on Bandstand, and he left to join King Crimson. He was replaced by Jim Cregan, and the group toured North America with Elton John immediately after the release of Bandstand. They received favourable exposure from American critics and radio DJs and built up a small but loyal cult following in the US as a result. Containg the singles “Burlesque” and “My Friend the Sun”, the album peaked at a modest #183 on the Billboard 200. The poster features dramatic artwork by Klaus Holitzka, with the artist’s imprint to the bottom right corner.

The poster measures 59.2 x 84.2 cm (approx. 23.3″ by 33.1″ inches) and is beautifully printed on thin, smooth-finish uncoated paper stock. In excellent unfolded and unmarked condition. Feel free to email us with any questions you may have concerning this item. Additional images of the poster available on request.
